2010 Fundraising Is Almost Here

Hello Wikipedians, I am Theo and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser. My job is to be the liaison between your community and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort; we recognize that banner messages which may perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to international audiences.

I'm contacting you as I am currently looking for translators who are willing to contribute to this project by helping translate and localize messages into different languages and suggesting messages that would appeal to your readers on the Fundraising Meta Page. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together.
Use the talk pages on meta, talk to your local communities, talk to others, talk to us, and add your feedback to the proposed messages as well! I look forward to working with you during this year's fundraiser. I take great pleasure in saying that people from Samskritha Bharathi, Bangalore, are indeed contributing to Sanskrit Wikipedia. Shijualex had conducted a workshop in the Samskrita Bharati premises in Girinagar, a workshop over which I presided as well. And while it is true that Rs. 1 crore has been allocated by the Government of Karnataka for this purpose, Sumana informs me that there are still some processes involved, such as cabinet approval perhaps. Sadly, it was more of an informal workshop, and I don't think anyone prepared the minutes of it. But I can tell you what happened there: Around 20 people, well versed in Sanskrit attended the meet. Shijualex explained the basics of Wikipedia to them. Many of them were very enthusiastic about it. Solution for local requests

I would like to make a proposal for solution of local request rights here. There is only one inactive crat on this wiki, as such according to policy, you may request permanent crat rights to handle local requests on sa.wiki. As per policy, there needs to be two active crats, you can nominate two people from the active community here, and then vote on them till a consensus is reached. After 2 weeks, you may request permanent crat rights from Stewards to handle local requests. Yup, The 15 count isn't exact but its around there. You can def. get that much support if you forward the request to the India Mailing list. Its an issue thats bound to come up again and again, its better to be addressed now. Enable Some User Groups

I give a proposal to add some new user groups to sa wiki like

1. roll backers
2. reviewers
3. abuse filterers
4. Eliminator(who can delete and undelete any page)

All the rights are already with admins but they should be also to active non-admins. That would help Sanskrit Wikipedia to grow faster. (Give your vote if you agree that this feature should be installed to meet the requirements of sanskrit wikipedia then put Y otherwise N for opposing )

• By reviewer, if you mean enabling something like the Recent changes patrol, it is completely useless for Sa wiki. Please expand on this point.
• We hardly get any vandalism. Try and define some abusefilters, and then we can decide whether it will really be useful.
• Again, it boils down to the vandalism. The last vandal I reverted was "never". Blatant vandalism is a rarity here, so Eliminator would not serve any real purpose.

All this rights are for those purposes for which Adminship can't be granted. I also agree that rollback and reviewer will not help us. But if we build a good abuse filter like hi wiki, it would be really useful. Please correct सुभाषितम्

I tried to restore सुभाषितम् to a stable state, which is reverted by श्री वैभव जैन. I don't mind it. But this list of Subhashits has many inconsistencies because of which I had to change to previous Subhashits. It is showing that it's source/origin is Rigveda, which is not so. It can also be verified on en:Suprabhatam that "The Veṅkaṭeśasuprabhātam was composed around 1430 A.D. by Prativādibhayaṅkara Śrī Anantācārya (also known as Annangaracharyar, and P B Annan), the Rāmānujācārya of Kanchipuram." User:Avenue X at Cicero

I have observed that User:Avenue X at Cicero is continuously vandalizing important pages of sa.wikipedia. First he deleted some some important recent record from सम्भाषणम्:प्रबन्धक page, then when I reverted it, he/she did a similar act at a smaller level on the same page. Now the turn is of विचारमण्डपम् page where he has deliberately removed <nowiki> tag to leave my message misleading. This is very intolerable. If this is due to not understanding संस्कृत, even then this is unacceptable, because in that case much care is required to do such changes (ironically this user has applied for adminship). My apologies to Hemant regarding the removal of a "nowiki", as I believed he wanted to embed it and failed. Sorry Hemant, but you still have some of my questions to answer. First he deleted some some important recent record from सम्भाषणम्:प्रबन्धक page: I think that process is called archiving. Well, one more thing I would like to say: Its funny that you post something in English when you want to speak against me, but in Sanskrit when users specifically request you post in English. Also, I believe a simple message at my talk page might have sufficed. Its amusing to have a person who claims to have been "offered" adminship and nominating himself [meaning o'course that he understands policies] using the विचारमण्डपम् like the ANI. Statistical report of Indian language wiki projects - 2011 October

One interesting facts from this report is:

• Nearly 4.3 crore readers are there for all Indic language wikipedias! This number is huge and increased by nearly 1/3 in just 1 month! So Indic wikis has huge existing reader base.

Summary and perspectives from Discussions with Indic language wikimedians - 2011

I have sent a detailed note to the various local language and India community mailing lists summarizing my discussions with various Indic editors. In this note, I have also shared my perspectives on a series of issues related to community building (keeping existing editors, welcoming back old editors, attracting newbies, improving outreach, encouraging communication, collaborating on articles, and celebrating success), project quality (discouraging the use of bots for content creation and being more selective in adoption of English wikipedia policies) as well as on readership. Preserving the heritage of Samskritam

Dear Sanskrit wikipedians,

Over the past few weeks I have discussed the current state and the future of Indic wiki projects with many Indic language wikipedians - and I spoke with few sanskrit wikipedians also. And after discussuion with more than 10 Indic wiki communities, I have provided the summary of discussions and my ideas about taking Indic wiki projects forward. During the discussion many of you have asked for clear ideas to improve the strength of the community and quality of projects. I have been thinking about what would be most appropriate for Sanskrit community and I want to share some specific suggestions for Sanskrit wikipedia. I am recommending these based on ideas from Sanskrit editors as well as learnings from other Indic communities which have relevance for Sanskrit.

As of now we have around 20 active wikipedians and more than 6,000 articles for Sanskrit wikipedia. Also we have strong wiki activism in Sanskrit wikisource. I think the single most powerful way of achieving the huge potential for Sanskrit wiki projects is to further build its community. Increase communication and collaboration between editors is one way of doing this since that will retain existing editors and attract more users to for Sanskrit wiki. Sanskrit community may consider working on more frequent interaction (online and face-to-face), increasing the spirit of common purpose and bonding amongst editors and last, but not least, attracting newbies.

Below are some points that I request Sanskrit wiki community to consider.

Community Building

Wiki meetups

Physical meetings between wikipedians is a really strong way to help the growth of Indic wikipedias. As you know meetups connect us with like-minded people, build friendships, help share ideas and plan initiatives. For small communities, there is always the feeling that we are all alone - and meetups help to correct this perception and this is a source of inspiration. We should have meetups of Sanskrit wikipedians anywhere and everywhere in the world where there 2-3 of you in the same town. In the NCR area (Delhi/Gurgaon/Noida/Faridabad), please feel free to use the office in Hauz Khas for meetups. For other areas please plan and meetup. Physical meetings between wikipedians are very much required to grow a healthy wiki community in any indic langauge wikipedia. I will help in every possible way to support all the initiatives regarding this.

WikiProjects

As most of you know WikiProjects are informal groups of wiki editors who work work together as a team to improve Wikipedia. These groups often focus on a specific topic area (for example, articles related to Sanskrit language or India specific topics) or a specific kind of task (for example, expanding stub articles). It allows editors to work with other editors - all of whom share a passion for the subject or task. It has worked really well in many languages across India. (For example, Malayalam wikipedia has a project on "Theyyam" an art form of Kerala, “Astronomy" project, "Stub elimination" project, Categorization project, and so on. Group of 3 or 4 Malayalam wiki community members interested in these projects are actively collabrating on these articles to enhance it). The idea I want to emphasis is, along with working on articles on our interest it will be nice if we could start collabrating with other community members. That will enhance our wiki editing experince and is good for the growth of community. That will help more existing users to continue in wiki for a long time.

Some suggestions for wiki projects are:

• Start a wiki project to create/expand all articles related to Sanskrit language
• Start a wiki project to create/expand articles about districts/villages of states of India.
• Start a wiki project to expand the stubs
• Start a wiki project to identify and remove potential copyright violated images and move the rest of the free images to commons
• Start a project on an area which 2-3 editors feel passionate about - whatever the subject might be.

In fact if we could get to know the interest of users we could easily design various small wiki projects as is happening in English wikipedia. The point I want to emphasis is that collaboration between editors will ensure a healthy community so that we can do more programs. The best way of collaboration is doing what we all love best - editing. So let us collaborate on what we love doing most.

Outreach

To encourage users to start editing in wiki some of us need to take initiative for some outreach activities. Outreach can be of 3 types - offline, online, and using media.

Online Outreach: Social Networking

Use social networking sites to reach out to people (Facebook, Twitter, and many others.) You can publicise your workshops through these sites or you can invite people to join the community or you can announce major achievements (like the news of Sanskrit wikipedia crossing the 25,000 article count, Sanskrit community digitized an important Sanskrit text and added to Sanskrit wikisource, and so on). Already many Indic wiki communities are doing this. We shall think about start using Social Networking sites for Sanskrit wiki projects also.

Offline Outreach: Wiki workshops

Wiki workshop is the best way to attract more users to wikipedia. As we know the current 20 active editors in Sanskrit wiki is a very very small tiny group considering the fact that we have lot of things to do. I know Samskritha Bharathi is already doing many Sanskrit wiki workshops. We should start doing more workshops to attract more users to wiki editing. Again in Delhi, we have the required space and infrastructure so please feel free to use it whenever Sanskrit wikipedians require it. For other locations if any one is interested to conduct wiki workshops please let us all know and we will work out some way of supporting for this. More important is community members need to come forward.

Offline Outreach: Sanskrit Instituions

Many institutions - like Samskrithi Bharati - have passionate people and invest time and money to preserve and promote Sanskrit. They do various things such as digitisation, language training, advocacy, outreach, etc . It will be very useful to invite and explore partnerships. Samskriti Bharati is already doing a lot of this.

Another aspect on offline outreach might be to look at state governemnets where Sanskrit is accorded high priority. For instance, Karnataka and Chattisgarh. (in Chattisgarh, it is actually the official language.)

Digital Preservation fo Sanskrit

A very important social benefit that all of you are supporting is the preservation of Sanskrit heritage. In this context, you should also consider giving some more extra care towards projects like Wikisource, Wiktionary, and Wikiquote for Sanskrit. All these are ways of participating in digital preservation of Sanskrit. Specifically on Wikisource, you can also look at digitization of documents either directly or through partnerships with interested organisations. There are so many Sanskrit artifacts in archives which are only in physical form now. I should say digitizing all these will benefit other indic languages also.

Can I request as many Sanskrit wikipedians to share you thoughts about these ideas. Do you think they are the right ideas for Sanskrit? If so and if not, why? Would you suggest any alternate ideas? If you like these ideas, which ones would you like to work on? Is there any help you need? Would you be interested in getting connected to other community members who might also be interested? Please share your ideas.

The reason I am asking everyone to participate is it will help us all as a community to identify people who have similar interests and to start interacting and working closely on these interests. The ideal outcome of this post is for the community to start planning some of these activities as a group. There are two ways of doing this. One is, if community members start discussing on this page and form groups interested in particular ideas. Three great font sets for Devanagari Unicode

Please visit this and associated pages to see three Devanagari Unicode font sets viz. Chandas, Uttara and Siddhanta. These fonts have also variation versions incorporating extra characters and ligatures used specifically in vedic sanskrit. (Some of them are yet to get a Unicode value).

It is suggested that you use any of the suitable fonts from this set as the default devanagari font for your browser. These fonts may also be added to our Input methods by the 'narayam' team. Administrators may please consider along this direction.

Updates from India Program Team

This is the first post from the India Program team regarding the team. I have been posting updates on the various mailing lists - but am acutely aware that the majority of our community is on village pumps or project pages and hence this post. Do excuse me for posting something which is not solely focused on this project, but the work we are doing has learnings that you might find useful for your project. Here are 5 important links that you might find useful

• Here is your India Program team. Feel free to reach out for any help or to provide any suggestion - or just to say hello!
• I submitted the following mid-year report to the community on January 15th 2011 - outlining the activities for 2011 and the priorities for 2012. Strictly speaking, this wasn't a mid-year report because it covered all of 2011, but going forward, I intend to make it a half-yearly affair. Please add your comments or suggestions here, or below this post.
• I have recently started monthly updates. The monthly update for February is available here. Please add your comments or suggestion here. The areas of emphasis for March are here. Please add your comments or here. This is really useful for us to ensure that we are doing what you need most.
• I have also started a new tab on the India Program page for Learnings, called Gyan. I think it is going to be a pretty cool place for us to put together a whole host of learnings, lessons, heartbreaks, Eureka moments and inspirations - gathered from all over the community. Stay tuned for more!
• One of the essential things that India Program needs to constantly work out is keeping our community informed of the work that we are doing - so that this work is clearer but also to help cross-pollinate ideas amongst a wider set of community members who might not have been engaged on specific village pump / talk page discussion or involved in particular activities (e.g. outreach events) or wikiprojects. I propose to have a fortnightly IRC for the community with India Program. (For those who are not familiar with IRC, it is an Internet messaging system similar to a regular chat room. It's very simple to use and you can join in by clicking on the following link. This would be done on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST (which is GMT + 0530) - THOUGH NOT THIS MONTH - BECAUSE I HAVE MISSED THE TIMELINE. Just for March, we will do it on March 15th and March 29th (both at 9pm IST which is GMT + 0530). I suggest that these chats are focused on specific work streams. As with many community meet-ups - folks will give time to attend a meet-up or participate in an IRC only if there is a topic of relevance to them. Therefore, we will do one IRC on Indic languages and one on Outreach & Communications. The March 15th one will be focused on Indic Languages and the one on March 29th will be on Outreach & Communications. (All IRCs will start with a re-cap of India Programs activities.) There is quite a bit of overlap on these topics - so feel free to join both. Please do also invite anyone who is interested to know more about India Program or - even more importantly - interact with fellow Wikimedians. As always, the logs will be put up on meta for the benefit of those who can't attend and for the record.

Wikipatrika: Next Issue

Dear all, I just sent an email to the Sanskrit mailing list regarding Wikipatrika. It's a fantastic way of celebrating the wonderful work of your community. I'm trying to help bring out the next issue in April 2012. Can i request you to create a page on the Sanskrit wikipedia and start adding content, and share this page with everyone else. You can create your stories in Sanskrit or in English. (Someone can then help translate it before it can move to wikimedia.in) Please do refer to my email for further details and please reach out to me if you need any help. Updates & Ideas from and for Indic Communities

Greetings all! I thought it would be useful to share the following updates from various Indic communities - which you might find interesting for the Sanskrit community.

• Odia community had a great weekend between March 30 and April 2 - including 3 outreach sessions and 1 community meetup. They shared a great report that includes lessons, solutions and next steps on outreach & community collaboration - which are applicable across many communities.

• Wikisource is seeing increased participation across communities and there is's a story that was shared about Gujarati community's Wikisource as well as an update from Shiju on a tool (DjVu) that will be useful to all Wiki librarians. If you are not familiar with Wikisource and want to know a little bit more, Amir Aharoni has written a basic introduction about it.

• Malayalam community is organizing the first Indic wiki conference ever - Sangamothsavam - on April 28-29 in Kollam, Kerala. They have very sweetly invited other Indic Wikimedians to attend, and we know that a couple of communities are going to be sending delegate - because they can take back ideas to their own communities.

• A couple of interesting Wikiprojects are active across different Indic communities. The medical project is up and running in Assamese, Bangla, Odia, Malayalam and Telugu. The Kannada community is working on a translation enhancement project

• India Program worked to several Indic communities on outreach, ideas for helping newbies, Wikiprojects as well as other technical support - and have prepared the following report for March. In April, the plan is to continue this support including Hindi editing at the Crafts Museum GLAM project as well as planning the 10th anniversaries of Nepali and Assamese.

• There are regular IRC meetings to discuss Indic languages, outreach and communication support that India Program provides. These are all logged here - and there are a couple of useful ones on how to establish and build Indic Wikisources as well as outreach, especially for Indic languages. (IRCs are conducted one 1st & 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST at #wikimedia-office. Please do join in; you'll find them very useful.)

Updates and Ideas for and from the India communities (May 2012)

Greetings! Here is another series of updates from across Indic language communities which might be useful for the Sanskrit community!

• The first Indian language Wikipedia conference: WikiSangamolsavam was successfully conducted by Malayalam Wikipedians in Kollam, Kerala.
• The Film project in Hindi Wikipedia has been active since December, 2011 with 4 editors and over 1000 film articles. It's also an open invitation for more members to hop in and expand the project scope.
• Gujarati Wikipedians have started working on their third book on Wikisource called Bhadrambhadra. They are also planning to conduct a Wiki summer camp for students in Gujarat.
• The Assamese community is doing great on a bunch of projects including the CD project, medicine project and the ongoing photo contest organized by volunteers. The community is also planning an event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Assamese Wikipedia on June 10th, 2012.
• The translation project in Kannada Wikipedia is 12 members strong.
• The Odia community members have implemented the social media pilot to attract newbies and engage them in editing via Facebook. This plan requires mentors from the existing community to guide new users to edit Wikipedia
• Here's is a list of all the Outreach documents translated in Indic languages by respective community members. This is work in progress and all community members are welcome to help translate more documents!
