परिचयः
प्रमुखेषु दशसु उपनिषत्सु बृहदारण्यकोपनिषत् अन्यतमा वर्तते । इयम् उपनिषत् शतपथब्राह्मणस्य अन्तिमभागो वर्तते । अद्यत्वे शतपथब्राह्मणं माध्यन्दिन-काण्वशाखाद्वये उपलभ्यते । काण्वशाखायां सप्तदश काण्डाः, माध्यन्दिनशाखायां चतुर्दश काण्डाः विद्यन्ते । बृहदारण्यकोपनिषदः षट् अध्यायाः काण्वशाखायाः सप्तदशे काण्डे उपलभ्यन्ते । अन्ये षड् काण्डाः माध्यन्दिनशाखायाः चतुर्दशे काण्डे उपलभ्यन्ते ।
विषयविभागः
इयम् उपनिषत् गात्रदृष्ट्या विषयस्य महत्तायाः दृष्ट्या च बृहत्तमा एव वर्तते । पूर्णा उपनिषत् गद्यरूपेण एव वर्तते । अपवादरूपेण केचन श्लोकाः कुत्रचित् उपलभ्यन्ते । अस्याः षड् अध्यायाः सप्तचत्वारिंशत्सु ब्राह्मणेषु विभक्ताः सन्ति । ते पुनः काण्डिकारूपेण विभक्ताः सन्ति । अस्याः एव अन्यथा विभागः एवं वर्तते - समग्रा उपनिषत् काण्डत्रये विभक्ता अस्ति - मधुकाण्डः, याज्ञवल्क्यकाण्डः/मुनिकाण्डः, खिलकाण्डश्च । एकैकस्मिन् अपि अध्यायद्वयं विद्यते । एतेषु विभागेषु उपदेशः-उपपत्तिः-उपासनाविषयाः प्रस्तुताः सन्ति । अस्याः उपनिषदः भाष्यं श्रीशङ्कराचारैः लिखितम् अस्ति ।
