विश्वविद्यालयः उच्चशिक्षणम् अनुसन्धानञ्च कुर्वती संस्था अस्ति या बहुषु शैक्षिकविषयेषु शैक्षणिकोपाधयः प्रदत्तवती भवति। विश्वविद्यालयाः सामान्यानि स्नातकस्तरीयपाठ्यक्रमाणि च स्नातकोत्तरस्तरीयपाठ्यक्रमाणि च प्रददाति।[१][२]
यूरोपदेशे प्रथमाणि विश्वविद्यालयानि तत्सम्बंधीनः पादशालाभ्यः उत्पन्नानि या पादशालाः पुरोहितानां शिक्षायै चर्च्दीयेण स्थापिताः आसन्। बोलोन्यायाम् (इटली) स्थितः विश्वविद्यालयः यः १०८८ संवत्सरे स्थापितः आसीत्, प्रथमः विश्वविद्यालयः इति स्वभावेन कथ्यते यत्:[३][४][५][६][७]
- उन्नतस्तरीय उपाधिप्रदानसंस्था इव आसीत्।
- पादशालानाम् आधीनतायाः परित्यागेन तस्य स्वातन्त्र्यम् अभवत् तथा सैव-वैश्विकौ तथा पावनैः अपि न केवलं पवित्रानां उपाधीनां परन्तु लौकिकानां च उपाधीनां वितरणं अभवत्। शिक्षणं पादपादायोगेन च अपरपादपादायोगेन च समाचरत् - व्याकरणम्, वक्तृत्वशास्त्रम्, तर्कशास्त्रम्, धर्मशास्त्रम्, देवालयनियमशास्त्रम् तथा अभिलेखप्रमाणननियमशास्त्रः इत्यादयः विषया शिक्षिताः।[८][९][१०][११][१२]
