Hello Harshavs, I needed some help from you regarding a template on Sanskrit Wiki. The template in question is {{Welcome}}. I do not have a lot of Sanskrit exposure and knowledge, and so, I am not really able to figure out what is exactly written there. I would be grateful if you could translate and tell me what it exactly means. This is fairly important because I plan to use it to welcome new users to Wikipedia. संस्कृतम् तु एका प्राचीना समृद्धा च भाषा।

Sanskrit is an ancient and developed language.

प्राचीना भूत्वाऽपि भाषैषा नवीनपरिस्थितिषु अपि नूतनान् शब्दान् रचयितुं नूतनान् भावान् च व्यंजयितुं शक्ताऽस्ति।

In-spite of it being ancient, in a modern situation, you can construct new words and also new expressions.

अस्मिन् क्षेत्रे संस्कृतस्य सामर्थ्यं एतावत् अस्ति यत् सर्वाः अपि प्रमुखाः भारतीयाः भाषाः नवीन शब्दान् संस्कृतात् एव ग्रह्णन्ति।

Sanskrit's strength lies in the fact that all the major Indian languages, take(or form) the new words from it.

भारतस्य कस्यचिदपि लेखकस्य चिन्तकस्य वा दृष्टिकोणं संस्कृतस्य प्राचीन चिन्तन-परम्परया प्रभावितम् भवति।

Many of the Indian writers and thinkers derive their perspectives(influenced by) from Sanskrit's ancient thinking(philosophical??) traditions(heritage??) अतः संस्कृस्य उन्नतौ सम्पूर्ण भारतीय वाङ्मयस्य उन्नतिः भवेत्। Sanskrit's progress will lead to all Indian speakers' progress. (I am not sure about the meaning of this sentence)

अतएव संस्कृतस्य ज्ञानसमुद्रं सदा अद्यतनः नवीनश्च स्यात् इति कृत्वा अत्र संस्कृतविकिपीडियायां जगतः विविधक्षेत्राणां ज्ञानं संस्कृतेन लिखितुं प्रयत्नं क्रियते।

That is why, to increase Sanskrit knowledge with new and modern articles in Sanskrit Wikipedia, try to write articles in Sanskrit about various areas of knowledge in the world in Sanskrit Wikipedia.(Here again, I think this is what is being conveyed, though not sure about it) विकिपीडियायां लेखन-समये यदि भवतः मनसि संस्कृत-भाषा विषये काचित् समस्या वा प्रश्नं वा आगच्छति तदा भवान् अन्यान् सदस्यान् प्रष्टुं शक्नोति। While editing in Wikipedia, if you are to encounter any Sanskrit language related problem or question(doubt), you may take help from other members. संभाषण-पृष्ठेषु किंचिदपि लेखनात् पश्चात् स्वहस्ताक्षरान् अवश्यमेव योजयतु। तदर्थं भवान् -- ~~~~ इति लिखतु, पृष्ठस्य रक्षणपश्चात् हस्ताक्षराः स्वयमेव तत्र आगमिष्यन्ति। Do use your signature at the end of any article/discussion. Leading sentence style

A note on the style of the first sentence in articles. I've noticed you've created many articles on districts in Tamil Nadu. One suggestion I would like to make is that the first sentence should contain the name of the article itself. For example, in the article रामनाथपुरम् मण्डलः, the first sentence currently reads: तमिळनाडु राज्यॆ स्तिथ एकः मण्डलः। It should read: रामनाथपुरम् मण्डलः तमिळनाडु राज्यॆ स्तिथ एकः मण्डलः अस्ति। and the title word should be highlighted. सिक्किम

सिक्किम is written for Sikkim and is pronounced as Sikkim not Sikkima or Sie kim or si kiem

Yes, you are right, pronunciation of हलन्त words is always हलन्त in Sanskrit. About Sikkim same is the case as Nepal, here also Nepal is in Eng नेपाल in नेपाली pronounced as नेपाल् . Actually Sanskrit name for Sikkim is Indrakeel (इन्द्रकील) .

Nepali is also हलन्त sensitive like Sanskrit, we use the words (छन् , हुन् , संवत् etc.) but we are writing सिक्किम. Here your argument is also 100% right, but my mind is not ready to accept this: Reason: all the words of नपुंसकलिंग has last letter म् for गृह+म् , पुस्तक+म् etc. The main words are गृह, पुस्तक. but as far as Sikkim is concerned सिक्कि is not main word whole सिक्किम् is main. This is a case of pronoun, where I feel the argument for नपुंसकलिंग words do not apply. Pronouns should be written as they are pronounced is what I think. We should raise this issue in the community. - रामप्रियः १८:११, २१ मेय् २०११ (UTC)

New support group for all ancient language communities

Hi Harshavs, some of us are trying to set up a Wikimedia User Group to promote the use of Ancient Languages on Wikimedia.
