i/ˈbrɪ.tən/ अपि प्रसिद्धः कश्चन द्वीपः । अयं युरोप्-खण्डस्य वायव्यभागे विद्यते । २,०९,३३१ चतरस्रकिलोमीटर्मितेन विस्तारेण [५]}}युक्तः अयं द्वीपः युरोपस्थेषु बृहत्तमः द्वीपः विश्वे नवमः बृहत्तमः द्वीपः । [६] २०११ तमे वर्षे अस्मिन् द्वीपे ६१ मिलियन्-मिता जनसंख्या आसीत् । भूमौ अत्यधिकजनसंख्यायुक्तेषु द्वीपेषु तृतीयस्थाने विद्यते । [७] ऐर्लेण्ड्-द्वीपः अस्य पश्चिमदिशि विद्यते । एतं द्वीपं परितः सहस्राधिकाः लघुद्वीपाः विद्यन्ते येषु इङ्ग्लेण्ड्, स्काट्लेण्ड्, वेल्स्द्वीपाः अन्यतमाः ।
ग्रेट् ब्रिटन्-संयुक्तराज्यस्य उत्तर-ऐर्लेण्डस्य च भागरूपः विद्यते अयं द्वीपप्रदेशः । इङ्ग्लेण्ड्, स्काट्लेण्ड्, वेल्स्द्वीपानां राजधान्यः लण्डन्, एडिन्बर्ग्, कार्डिफ्-नगराणि च अस्मिन् द्वीपे अन्तर्भवन्ति ।
१७०७ तमस्य वर्षस्य मेमासस्य १ दिनाङ्के क्वीन् अन्-वर्यस्य नेतृत्वे आक्ट् आफ् यूनियन् १७०७ नियमानुगुणम् इङ्ग्लेण्ड्-स्काट्लेण्ड्देशाभ्यां युतं ग्रेट् ब्रिटन्-संयुक्तराष्ट्रस्य निर्माणं जातम् ।१८०१ तमे वर्षे अयं ऐर्लेण्ड्-देशेन सह विलीनं जातम् । ऐरिष्-स्वातन्त्र्यानन्तरम् ऐर्लेण्ड्-देशस्य महान् भागः संयुक्तराष्ट्रेण वशीकृतम् । अधुना ’युनैटेड् किङ्ग्डम् आफ् ग्रेट्ब्रिटन् उत्तर-ऐर्लेण्ड्’ इति च नामाङ्कनं कृतम् ।
